Jimmy Carter for Southern Living

Being the first time meeting him I didn’t want to attempt a conversation of anything political or the same old Peanuts, Billy Beer, Braves anecdotes I’m sure he gets all the time….So I brought up the fact that my wife and I just had a baby. At the time he was actually three weeks old that day. Now… the Carters had just celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary, have three sons, one daughter, eight grandsons, three granddaughters, and two great-grandsons….So what better person give advice for a new father right? He congratulated me and asked what my wife and I had. When I told him a boy..he smiled with that ever famous grin that he has and said “Children are great!…Love them and spoil them everyday!…But my advice?…keep trying till you have a daughter!” ¬†It turns out that he and his wife Rosalynn had tried for twenty years after they had their first boy to have a daughter. I only had a few minutes with him..but his face was lit up for the rest of our time together with the very mention of daddy’s little girl!
